The roots of sexual assault

How can we achieve a world without rape or any form of sexual violence? Elizabeth Schulte in Socialist Worker US in June 2011 explains what socialists have to say about the question. Sexual assault is the product of a class society in which sexual relationships between men and women are shaped by alienation from their own bodies and emotions, and from one another.

Of cats, mincing poodles and women’s oppression

The overthrow of women’s oppression, of sexism and homophobia, won’t be won through Labor. Equal Love and the Slutwalks are but two manifestations of the struggle against systemic oppression and socialists should and do support them.

However ultimately victory over these systemic conditions requires a victory over capitalism. That can only be won through working class struggle.

The point of the Slutwalk protests

While the call for these demonstrations does argue for re-appropriating the word slut, the primary emphasis is on a rejection of victim-blaming, breaking down sexist stereotypes and demanding sexual freedom for all women.

Sparks of a new women’s movement

SlutWalk is an antidote to blaming the victim, because it says no, we aren’t buying the lies, and we are standing up–all of us together. In marches and protests, women and men are attempting to rebuild the kind of uncompromising fightbacks that can create an atmosphere where sexism isn’t tolerated.

Walking to say we’ve had enough

Challenging the idea that there are certain behaviors women should or shouldn’t engage in with their bodies must be central in the fight against sexual violence. These Slut Walk protests are positive, much-needed developments that can play a key role in rebuilding struggles that can reclaim our lives, our bodies and our choices.
