The letter that Murdoch rejects

Perhaps my problem of non-publication in The Australian is that I articulate my case too well. One solution might be to have a real socialist like me write a weekly column for the Australian. I offer Cater’s endorsement in support of my application. I know The Australian, like me, is committed to diversity of opinion. I look forward to your offer of substantial remuneration for a regular column.

Articulating a case for Socialist Alternative

This is what the praise for me from Cater in The Australian is about. See, there are sensible socialists who can argue for the overthrow of capitalism (but of course whom we don’t print at all) but those inarticulate socialist yahoos in Socialist Alternative actually exercising free speech and practising real democracy, and putting pressure on the government, are beyond the pale. Well, actually, they aren’t beyond the pale. They are one of the few groups building any sort of real resistance to Abbott’s Budget attacks. It is a lesson unions should learn.

The real violence is the Abbott government’s Budget

Workers are angry and looking for a lead. Socialist Alternative at the moment is much too small to give the call for action, but our unions are not. The all union members meeting on Tuesday of the Victorian Trades Hall Council has the potential to refocus the anger in the hands of rank and file union members and to mobilise workers as workers against the attacks on them and the poor. That is where the power to beat the Budget lies.

Stop work to stop the bosses’ Budget.

Accusations of anti-Semitism and the freedom to organise at ANU

Me in the ANU student newspaper Woroni online today.

‘It is not every day you get labelled a violent anti-Semite. But that is effectively what Woroni called me and other socialists when it published a piece called Anti-Semitism at the ANU on 11 March this year.’

That Q&A protest – this is what democracy looks like

What a magnificent student protest on ABC’s Q&A on Monday night. Tony Jones and the other members of the one percent were not amused. Get used to it Tony. This is what democracy looks like.

Sol Salbe: Antisemitism – a good idea to find the real culprit

Sol Salbe has posted on facebook the following introduction and link to his article on allegations of antisemitism against the Left, in particular against Socialist Alternative. The article includes a discussion of the evidence involved in the allegations of antisemitism against Socialist Alternative at the ANU.

I am reposting this with his permission.

The degeneration of Socialist Alternative continues

Socialist Alternative is now a home for crude Stalinist hacks like James Crafti. It has no space for people like me. I think that perfectly captures its degeneration.

Top ten 2013: Macquarie University cracks down on anti-Abbott T-shirt

This re-post of an article from Red Flag comes in at number six on my top ten most read articles for 2013. It is kind of ironic given that one of the reasons I resigned from Socialist Alternative is its de-politicisation, represented by F**k Tony Abbott T-shirts. On the other hand the crackdown on people wearing these T-shirts is much more dangerous.

Why I have resigned from Socialist Alternative

If I thought that I could have raised these many issues in a calm and relaxed atmosphere within Socialist Alternative I would have. But the hothouse that is the organisation and its one-sided cadre development means I can’t and couldn’t without expecting a barrage of abuse and fake debate on positions I don’t hold.

I still regard building a revolutionary party around key principles like the self-emancipation of the working class and deep democracy both within the organisation and within society as essential.

At this juncture that space doesn’t exist for me in Socialist Alternative.

Eleanor Morley: Why I joined Socialist Alternative

For me, joining Socialist Alternative (SA) has been a slow process, often hindered by the criticisms (or lies) about SA that I have inevitably been told as a member of the Grassroots Left at Sydney University writes Eleanor Morley in Socialist Alternative.
