Australia’s media – more sit-com than satire

Thank heaven for The Australian.

Strike to defend the ABC and SBS

We need more protesters and less Tony Jones on ‘our’ ABC. So how can we defend the ABC and SBS? How can we defend the jobs, the work-life balance of the remaining workers and the ability to deliver some quality programs from time to time instead of the shit dished up on the commercial channels?

There is only one way. The two main unions, the Media Arts and Entertainment Alliance and the Community and Public Sector Union have to call their members out on strike until the government backs down. The unions would have mass support if they did this. The ACTU and individual unions have to pledge that if any action is taken against these ‘illegal’ strikes under bourgeois law then members in other unions will walk off the job. This is the only way to stop Abbott and Turnbull, and in doing that we open up the possibility of a more democratic and popular ABC and SBS reflecting the views of a population which is far to the left of the major political parties on most issues.

In defending the ABC and SBS we have the chance to reclaim them.

My August 2012 post on idiot Abbott

I wrote an article about Abbott back in August 2012. Recent events seem to confirm my analysis. Here is a snippet.

The bosses will welcome an Abbott victory. Buffoons can make good leaders for them, as Ronald Reagan and George W Bush showed in the US context.

But Abbott’s instability, his thought bubble approach to policy, his climate denialist base within the extreme right of the Liberal Party and the looming economic crisis in Australia all make for a possible tumultuous period of rule for the leader of the Opposition and his by and large unremarkable front bench if they win, as they will, the next election.

The key will be class struggle. How much longer can Australian workers not fight?

The case against Obama’s (and Abbott’s) new war

Ashley Smith and Alan Maass in Socialist Worker US provide the facts you need to know about the U.S. war on ISIS – and why it will make the world more chaotic and violent than ever.

Australia’s adult government is one year old

There is no alternative to defeating the neoliberalism of Abbott and the neoliberalism of the Labor Party than class struggle; massive, unified strikes.

Tell the Americans to pressure Egypt to release Peter Greste and his colleagues

If Abbott and Bishop really want Peter Greste freed, then it is time to play dirty. Threaten Pine Gap and the US base in Darwin if Obama doesn’t get the Egyptians to release Peter Greste and his colleagues. The task for the Egyptian people, again, is to overthrow the tyranny and this time defeat reaction. Only a working class socialist revolution can do that.

After the marches in May, where to now?

There will be a minority of workers and others who are being forced by the current Budget attacks to understand that if you don’t fight you lose and that striking is the best way to fight. If that is the case then it is our task to talk to that minority and show them by our arguments and activity that our vision for action now and for the future is the way to win the current fight and the ultimate goal, a truly democratic society in which production occurs to satisfy human need.

Stop work to stop the bosses’ Budget.

A government of liars

The real message from the SPC decision is that the Liberal Government wants capital to launch attacks on jobs, wages and conditions now to restore declining profit rates and to set the scene for an escalation of rhetoric and attacks when unemployment worsens, as it will in the coming months. A good response, rather than hitting their heads against a brick wall, would be for SPC workers to occupy the plant and begin producing canned fruit for free for poor people.

Bernardi’s counter revolution

Why won’t one of the Labor Left or Greens politicians make the obvious call – the only way to defend our side’s gains from attack by Abbott and Bernardi is by striking and with massive demonstrations?
